Bem Vindo! Welkom! (Our fifteen active team members last year spoke a total of eight languages, including English, Japanese, Spanish, French, German, Hebrew, Portugese, and Afrikaans.)
We are a second-year FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology) team based at Tualatin High School in Oregon. Our team is officially the NASA / Tualatin High School Robotics Team. As part of the FIRST Challenge, our team creates a robot each year to score points in regional competitions. Our team participates as Team #2002, TETRA.
For the challenge we brainstorm, design, build, test, and refine a 100 to 120-pound robot to complete challenges and compete with an alliance of two other robots and against three other robots in a series of two and one half minute matches.
Robotics is a unique and cool activity. It is a "sport of the mind" that requires problem solving, innovation, creativity, and teamwork. Your skills might be in design, mechanics, programming, video gaming (precise robot control!), marketing, business, photography, web design, or animation. No matter what your skills, we can use you on our robotics team!
Robotics is completely run by us, the students. We have mentors that help us approach problems and work together effectively, but the robot is essentially completely student-designed and built. It is incredible that twenty or thirty kids can make a working robot that successfully completes tasks! To learn more about last year's robot, see our robots page. For the 2007 competition year, we competed at the Pacific Northwest Regional in Portland, Oregon. In the 2008 season, we plan to compete at the Pacific Northwest Regional and the Microsoft Seattle Regional.
